December Delights

Of all of our meetings held through out the  year the December meeting has to be the most outrageously fun with more laughter than our room has ever seen! The sheer delight in exchanging gifts, the thievery, the cunning at which people swap presents, the groans, the big smiles and when the gift opening finally starts the Ohs and Awes of our stitchery is complete. As you may have guessed our December meeting is our gift swap and this year was our year to shine at our ingenuity and cleverness.

But first down to business. We started with a change up of order and first did our show and tell. Pictures to follow. During show and tell Karen showed us the quilts for El Salvador that some of our members donated blocks for. Wow, what a great project and another charity that we have helped. There are currently 15 quilts in different forms of construction. They will be sent off later this month.

Our Charity quilt is almost finished and ready for shipping between Christmas and New Years. It’s a shame  Dorothy was not at our meeting to hear the wonderful chatter of delight from everyone! Dorothy you did an outstanding quilting display of different stitches. The negative space is no longer negative and now it sings to us when our eyes move over the quilt surface. I doubt there will be any quilt at QuiltCon with such devotion and hard work as ours!! We have chosen Niagara Health System as our Charity.  Lorna will be hand stitching the binding and also making a label. Susan will make and attach the sleeve and then our quilt be sent off to Savannah, Georgia for the 2017 QuiltCon Guild Charity Challenge. Heather will start the Blog post about our quilt and it’s journey with our members then each member of the Collaboration Group will add their own words to the story of how Niagara Modern Quilt Guild creates a Charity Quilt.

Our member Jennifer Dyck has entered a quilt to QuiltCon. Good Luck Jen !!!

We had a discussion about Guest Speakers and would like to have Susan Clark as a speaker. Debbie will be contacting her for details and to arrange a date.

Stephanie presented our financial statement which has been added to our notebook and then we had elections for the next 2 year term. Susan will be our President, welcome to the executive Tara McInerney as Vice President and Effie will be our secretary. Lorna will continue as member at large in the capacity of Publicity/Social Media with Debbie. Memberships were also renewed.

Challenges for the coming 3 months are:

January – Tree

February – Windy Day

March – Flying Geese

I bet you never knew how great our members are at baking too. We are just a multi-talented group and break was a welcome highlight to the night.

We really flexed our muscles and put on our running shoes for our gift swap. How it works is that each member who wanted to participate ( everyone did! ) brought in a homemade market/tote bag gift wrapped. Numbers were drawn and each member would take a bag from the centre of the room and either keep that bag ( without opening the gift ) or would swap it with another member. You can really envision that the more decorative the wrapping the more the gift moved around within our circle. The delight from each recipient was evident because once the last number had been drawn the opening of the gifts happened.  Big thank you’s from each member followed and our Christmas Tradition will live on in the beautiful bags we each received! You can tell from the smiles in the pictures how delighted we all are with our new found gift!

Our magnificent gift exchange and the bags/totes that each person received. I have 2 unidentified bags so if they belong to you please let me know and I’ll add the information. The name posted to the bag is the name of the recipient. Everything was happening too fast to include who the giver was!!
